FAQs and Answers:

  1. If register my children Monday/Wednesday/Friday, but on Monday I find out I have to work on Tuesday, can I add a Tuesday?

Yes! You may certainly add days to camp anytime before you come to camp (in this case Monday morning). We recognize that changes arise in parents’ work schedules and will try to be as flexible as possible.  At the same time, we like having a sense of how many campers will have for scheduling purposes, planning fieldtrips, and counselor’s work schedules - so please let us know as soon as possible of any changes.  Also, since there have been changes to the day to day pricing, the 4th and 5th day added to the week will be $10 less.  Therefore, if you have a child signed up and paid for 3 days of the week, then you add a day or two, the price for those last two days will be less.

  2. What are the qualifications of the camp counselors?

Summer Camp Counselors are highly selected individuals, who have been carefully interviewed and trained to be outstanding summer camp counselors.  They have a deep faith and love for our Lord Jesus Christ and are active members of the church (baptized and confirmed).  All full-time counselors are graduates of high school who take seriously their role as a Christian camp counselor.

There is a lengthy application process for all counselor applicants that involves a paper application, an interview with the camp directors and Rev. Andrew Koschmann (Senior Pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church).  Then 2 weeks prior to the beginning of camp, each counselor will complete a first aid and CPR training certification (if they do not already have an updated certification).

  3. What should I expect on the first day of camp?

Please bring your child to the entrance of the Ministry Activity Center (gym). A camp counselor will be there to greet you at our welcome table. We will distribute your child’s camp T-shirt, water bottle and backpack at this time. Please review the list of clothing and personal belongings (see below).

  4. What should I wear and bring to camp?
Please clearly write your child’s name on all your belongings
    Campers should wear:

    • Simple, comfortable, washable play clothes.
    • Our Savior Summer Camp T-shirt on all field trip days.
    • Socks and shoes to summer camp every day.  Flip flops and sandals are only allowed at the pool.
    • Jeans or pants are recommended for trips involving hiking in the woods.

    Campers should bring:

    • Summer camp backpacks (a great place for them to keep their swim clothes, towel, lunch, sunscreen, etc.)
    • Sack lunch and drink
    • Swimsuit and towel
    • A personal container of cream sunscreen.  The counselors will remind the campers to apply the sunscreen, but the campers are responsible for applying the sunscreen themselves.

  5. When am I expected to pay?

Summer Camp payment is expected the first day of attendance in each week. This is a pre-pay program. Please make checks payable to Our Savior Lutheran Church. All fieldtrips require pre-purchased tickets; therefore, there will be a $10 fee for missed days.

  7. What about Vacation Bible School Week?

All summer campers grades K-6th will be automatically enrolled in VBS. If your child attends summer camp for the whole day there is no extra VBS registration or registration fee. 7th and 8th graders will have separate activities with their summer camp counselors.

  8. What if one of the fieldtrips is canceled because of rain?

Every summer one or two fieldtrip/pool days are changed and/or canceled because of inclement weather. As a summer camp staff we have put together a series of fun rain-day activities as substitute for the inclement weather including an indoor scavenger hunt, popcorn and movie day, juggling, charades, and several other activities and art projects that make for a great day at camp.

  9. How will my children be supervised at the water park, especially the younger campers?

We take very seriously the safety and supervision of all of the children at camp and at the pool. Children going into Kindergarten and 1st grade are grouped together so that they may receive the most amount of attention and care from our counselors. The ratio for this age group is usually 1/6 and never more than 1/8. When at Our Savior they have their own room for morning activities and exclusive use of the church's playground.

When at the pool, the younger children are always with a camp counselor. The younger children spend most of their time at the pool in the shallow end of the pool (there's a nice shallow section of the pools, where the children are free to play in the water with the counselors). They also spend time in the sand area of the water park. For all of the campers, when we are at the pool, we divide the counselor staff so that half of them are in the water swimming with the campers, and the other half are either in the sand area or walking along the edge of the pool wearing staff T-shirts, which makes them accessible for the lifeguards in the event of an emergency and also for the kids, especially if they need to go to the bathroom or get more sunscreen, etc.

We have the kids change for the pool at Our Savior, which provides the children with a safe and monitored environment free from the chaos of the water park's locker room. Our summer camp counselors are trained in CPR and First Aid. We expect from all of our counselors that the needs and safety of the campers be their highest priority. We do also understand that parents of especially smaller children may decide that they do not want their child to go swimming. While all of the campers go to the water park on pool days, there are other activities that they can do instead of swimming (e.g. playing in the sand area, hanging out with a counselor on the pool deck, etc.). If this is the case, we would talk with the parents one on one to go over any specific requests for children while at the water park.
